The Strangest Thing I’ve Ever Done to Reach a Fitness Goal

I’m officially two years out from my marathon goal! It has been really fun to watch all my runner friends on social media arrive at Disney for WDW Marathon weekend and know that, in 24 months, I’ll be one of them!

But I still have a long way to go–and I’m excited to get started working my way up to marathon level. To kick things off, I did something pretty strange.

I quit the gym.


I had been feeling a little burnt out by the classes, and I really had to drag myself there. So–despite the new year and the influx of new resolution members–I handed in my 30 day notice.

Obviously, I am not resigning myself to a slovenly life of Cheetos and Netflix (although at the end of this post-holiday week, that sounds pretty good). I am focusing on 5K training for the next few months, and have a few 5Ks on the calendar. First one up is the Hot Chocolate 5K at the end of January.

I’m really looking forward to getting out of the gym and finding some fun in my fitness this month. I’d love to know–what do you do when you feel burnt out at the gym?

  1. I do workouts in a variety of places so that no one place becomes begrudging to go to. First, I never run at the gym. I’m an outdoor runner, all year round. This time of year that means head to toe coldgear, gloves, hoods – the whole nine. For cycling, I rotate between outdoor rides, bike trainer rides and spin bike (with a class or just me in the studio). Swimming is my zen so I do that 3-4 days a week. There are certain classes I love, so I fit those in in between. I think variety is key. Find the things you enjoy and love and you’ll look forward to doing them which will minimize your burnout. Good luck with your training and hitting that 1st Marathon goal!!

  2. As someone that currently loves the gym, I’m so happy that you were strong enough to know what feels right to you and go after that. Good luck with your 5K endeavors! I’m not a runner, but I’ve done a few 5K’s in college and have sworn I will get back into them this year. You save money exchanging your gym membership to one that you love. I’m looking forward to reading about your new adventures in the fitness world 🙂

I totally agree with you gyms could be very frustrating at time honestly speaking I prefer to workout at the comfort of my home yes your own home could be tempted to be lazy but when I look at myself in the mirror and I don’t like something meaning I want to loose weight I start telling myself no you gotta do this I think the number one key factor is to love yourself once you have that confidence no matter where you are you will always achieve your goals check out my first traveling blog and let me know what you think xxxx
