Creating a Healthy Living Mission Statement

I want to give a special welcome to all the new readers visiting today through the “Grow Your Blog” blog hop! Thanks for stopping by!

When I created this blog, Girl Seeking Healthy, it was because I was frustrated. I was not new to the blogging world, but I was having a hard time finding my niche. I liked to write about parenting, the books I read, fitness and running–so what was I supposed to call myself? After a lot of thought, I decided that what I really wanted to write about was something I knew I–and a lot of other people–struggled with: leading a happy, healthy, well-balanced life.

It’s not easy. We’re all busy–we’ve got kids, jobs, hobbies, passions, and races to train for. And even though I actively think about (and write about!) searching for that balance every day, I still struggle with it. So I decided to create a healthy living mission statement for myself, outlining exactly what it was I was trying to accomplish. My three big things:

  • Family (and for me, this means my immediate family plus those friends who have come into my life and might as well be family)
  • Finding more time for fitness in my life
  • Writing and reading

I felt a little silly and cheesy writing my mission statement, but I’m pretty pleased with it. I think it’s going to help me focus in on what I’m really working toward and serve as a visual reminder when I’m started to feel overwhelmed. I’ll be able to look at it and ask myself: is how I’m spending my time helping me move towards what I really want in life?

MissionStatement

What would you include in your healthy living mission statement?

  1. Creating a mission statement is such a great idea! It keeps your blog and focus true to you and allows you to write about the things that are closest to your heart. Things that I would include in my mission statement would be living a balanced life with lots of exercise, some baking for fun, time with family and friends, travel, and enjoying a good glass of wine every now and again 🙂

    1. Those are awesome things! I love that I can tell so much about you by just the things you’d put in your statement. Thanks for stopping by!

  2. Stopping by thanks to the blog hop. You can find me over at runmum.com

This reminded me of the mission statement I had to write the first time I did 30daypush (free, by Chalene Johnson, and totally freaking grouse).

I think it’s important for everyone to write their own mission statement. Because it’s all about finding a balance, all while achieving your goals, but staying true to you.

  3. Hi! I’m dropping by from the blog hop.
I love your mission statement (I need to do this, too.)! Honestly, my mission statement would be very similar to yours.
I’m kind of in a blogging rut (part of why I’m doing the hop) and struggle with whether my “brand” fits my goals/interests/etc still. I, too, love to write and read, so that’s the big reason I blog. I’m still searching for my niche & voice, I think.
I’m really glad I discovered your blog and can’t wait to read more. 🙂

    1. The whole “brand” thing can be really hard to navigate! It has taken me a handful of years to settle on it. Can’t wait to take a visit to your page!

  4. Hi there! Visiting from the blog hop. Honestly, I never thought of having a mission statement for myself. But I really like the idea, and I love the question you ask of yourself: “is how I’m spending my time helping me move towards what I really want in life?” I think it’s really important to stop every now and then (once a week, once a month?) and ask yourself this question. I know I will be thinking about it more often and making changes as needed. Thanks for the push!

  5. That’s a great mission statement! I hadn’t thought about creating one til now but if I did it would probably include something about balance and moderation. I believe you can be healthy and still enjoy everything life has to offer 🙂

  6. What a great mission statement! I have one too that I read weekly or daily – depending on how I’m feeling in life! It’s just such a great reminder to come back to our purpose and know that we can conquer the world if we put our mind to it!

  7. Love your mission statement! I think having a balanced life with healthy choices is so key to a happy life:) I also love your quality over quantity statement, it is so true! If we make even just a few healthy living choices the benefits to the quality of our life can be massive. I always like to say, no one can ever be perfect with all their choices, but all they need to do is try to do the best they can with what they have.

    1. Definitely! I have tried plenty of times to not allow myself any moderation and it’s always a disaster. Thanks for stopping by.

  8. Hi! I’m stopping over from the blog hop – so nice to meet you! I love your mission statement! It’s very well worded and encompasses almost all aspects of life. It’s so great that you mention creating your own words and stories – taking time for yourself and giving yourself a creative outlet is so important! I myself don’t have a missions statement per se, but I do have a motto – “one healthy choice at time.” I try to live by that rule every day and take things as they come. I hope we can stay in touch! 🙂

    1. I love that motto! I am guilty of trying to overplay and control things, so this is something I really need to remember! Thanks for stopping by and for your thoughtful comment.

  9. Hi! I’m visiting from the hop. I love that you made a personal mission statement. No need to feel silly and cheesy! I like that you mention positive people, because that is such an important thing. Having a balanced life is key too. I think I’ll work on my own mission statement. Thanks for the great idea!

    1. Right? There are so many people who can drain you–I’m a people pleaser, so I have to be really careful who I spend my time with. Thanks for stopping by!

  10. Hah! I had so much trouble finding my “niche” for my blog. I keep evolving now. Because of this I probably need to come up with a more accurate and specific mission statement 🙂 Also, not cheesy, I like it! I think my three things might be something along the lines of: family, health, balance… food, being happy… ok, that’s more than three!

    1. It’s ok to have more than three! You can have as many as you want! I had to limit myself to three or my Type A personality kicks in. Thanks for stopping by!

  11. I absolutely love the idea of writing a mission statement to put your goals into focus – what a great way to get to know you! I also write about living a balanced, healthy lifestyle, but that’s only half the battle as I struggle too! There are so many things I would include in my mission statement, and it all really leads back to being mindful in every aspect of my life, which is really what founded my blog mindfullymiranda.com ! 🙂 Loved this post!

    1. I like that you have a focus that you return to, and I love the word “mindful”–I can’t wait to read more about it on your blog.

  12. I love the idea of doing this! It makes your choices so much easier when you know exactly what you’re trying to accomplish. Then any time you have to make a decision, you can just ask yourself if it fits in with your mission statement! As for my own – I will put making one on my to-do list, but I agree that balance is key!

  13. I’m attempting to comment again….not sure where my comment (from early this morning) went LOL. Anyways, I think your mission statement is great! I think all of us have similar thoughts and goals, but putting them in print really makes us accountable. Awesome idea!!

  14. Hi! A mission statement is a brilliant idea! I wish I had thought to set some perameters to my blog but I just kinda write. I may have to put some more thought into that, thanks!!!

  15. Creating a mission statement is a wonderful idea! I think it’s a lot harder than it sounds and you did a wonderful job. I also wonder how often I would change and update mine if I were to do one. It would probably need to include something about loving myself as I would love my family and friends. 🙂 You’ve challenged me to think about this!!!

  16. Totally love your mission statement!!!

I think it covers everything…self, wants, desires, quality times with family and friends.

Now you have me thinking about a mission statement-I really like that idea to keep one focused and posting in line with what matters!
